Effect of late-onset epilepsy on cognitive functioning in patients with small vessel disease

Late-onset epilepsy (LOE) often has underlying cerebrovascular cause and has been associated with neurocognitive deficits and dementia. Nevertheless, the interplay between these factors has not been studied thus far. Hence, we conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to explore how unprovoked epileptic seizures along with vascular-related factors contribute to neurocognitive impairments in patients with cerebral small vessel disease.

Sex differences in brain atrophy and cognitive impairment in Parkinson’s disease patients with and without probable rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder

The presence of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) contributes to increase cognitive impairment and brain atrophy in Parkinson's disease (PD), but the impact of sex is unclear. We aimed to investigate sex differences in cognition and brain atrophy in PD patients with and without probable RBD (pRBD).

Group and sex differences in social cognition in bipolar disorder, schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder and healthy people

Impairment of social cognition is documented in bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder (SCH). In healthy individuals, women perform better than men in some of its sub-domains. However, in BD and SCH the results are mixed. Our aim was to compare emotion recognition, affective Theory of Mind (ToM) and first- and second-order cognitive ToM in BD, SCH and healthy subjects, and to investigate sex-related differences.
